This weekend, we celebrate two national holidays; Juneteenth on Friday, June 19 and Father's Day on Sunday June 21.

Both of these celebrations invite us to deeper reflection of our faith. Scripture speaks of God as Father - Jesus encouraged his disciples to call God, "Abba" an intimate and personal name, akin to "Daddy" or "Papa" in modern terms. As we celebrate and honor (and even grieve) our earthly father's today, we do so with an awareness that God is a Father to us.

And the pivotal moments in the history of God's work in this world are stories of freedom, deliverance, and liberation. God's great act of deliverance in leading Israel out of slavery in Egypt shows God as one leads His people into freedom. And Christ's death and resurrection gives us the ultimate freedom; from sin, it's power, and the consequences that come with it. As we celebrate the proclamation of freedom to slaves in Galveston Texas, we do so with and awareness that in Christ, God has spoken a word of freedom to this world.
