I've never experienced it as a swimmer, but I have in a small rubber raft when I was a teenager. The effect is that the tide keeps pulling you out towards the open ocean; people can swim (or paddle) against it as hard as they can until they are exhausted; countless people have drowned this way. The secret of dealing with a riptide, as signs posted at the beaches will tell you, is to relax and let it carry you outward; once you're out a bit from shore, you can swim sideways, parallel to the beach, for a short distance, and the same tide will actuall...

Often our first encounters with death involve our pets. Ask an older child about what pets they've had, and there's a good chance you'll hear something like this, "I had a hamster names Snowflake, but she died…" That word in the middle, "but," tells us that as children we see this as exceptional. Sermon - March 14, 2021, "The Good Shepherd" Blessings, Pastor Chris -- Sermon – "The Good Shepherd" – John 10:1-18 March 14, 2021 Chris Coon, PBPC Introduction Sheep are among the most helpless of animals, especially when they are weighed down by their heavy woolen coat, prior to shearing. The heavy wool keeps them from moving quickly, especially when it gets wet. I heard a story years ago about a modern day shepherd going in search of three missing sheep; they eventually found them, and they were "cast" – they had somehow rolled onto their backs and they were stuck that way. This is extremely dangerous for sheep, as they can suffocate, thirst or starve, and maybe worst of all, they are vulnerable to predators.  It is not necessarily flattering that in the Bible God's people are compared to sheep.
