The history of Christmas gift giving goes back to the early fourth century, when Dec. 25 was decided as the date for celebrating Christ's birth; gift giving was tied to the gifts that the wise men brought, as well as to the story of Saint Nicholas, who is said to have rescued three girls from being forced into prostitution by dropping a sack of gold coins through the window of their house each night for three nights so their father could pay a  dowry   for each of them. Christmas is certainly a season that is associated with joy. Like the song says, for many this is the "happiest time of the year." The decorations, the music, the gift-giving – all of these have such positive associations and bring back good memories of childhood, of family, of tradition – of joy. But for many people, we should acknowledge that the Christmas season is not necessarily so positive; it is actually a difficult and somewhat depressing time of the year.
