7.22.2025 PBPC Family Bulletin

PBPC Family,

My guess is that most members of PBPC don't listen to hip-hop (though I could be wrong!), so you most likely missed nobigdyl, a Christian hip-hop artist, recently winning NPR's Tiny Desk Contest Fan Favorite for the second year in a row. Last year, nobigdyl won for his song "Go With the Ghost". This year, his song "imago interlude" took the top spot again as a fan favorite. Christianity Today interviewed nobigdyl, who's real name is Dylan Phillips, which is how I stumbled on his music and videos. I encourage you to watch the video and read the lyrics to his song.

I was convicted by the last line of nobigdyl's song - "You don't know Jesus til you see him in your enemy." The final lyric especially takes on deeper meaning in light of everything he says before.

I know many of us feel overwhelmed by everything that is happening in the world. It is important for us to be able to name the evil that is happening - the killing, the violence, the demonization and denigration of others is morally wrong. As people of faith and truth, we ought not to shy away from calling evil for what it is. God has called us to be a people of righteousness and that means we see the world through the lens of God's justice and righteousness.

At the same time, there is an insidious temptation to vilify and demonize those who commit the evil we abhor. The invitation, one that nobigdyl reminds us, is to see Christ in them. God's image may be marred and obscured by sinful choices and actions but it is never erased. It is a conscious choice and practice to see Christ in our enemies. It is only possible through prayer and Spirit.

Take a moment today to pray for your enemies. Pray for their good, for their flourishing, for God to be revealed to them in Spirit and truth. In praying for our enemies, we come to see Jesus in them.

Looking forward to worshipping with you on Sunday!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Calvin
