PBPC Family,

Tonight, we will be joining with other churches in Oakland to wait on God and intercede for our town together. We will be using Jesus' inaugural sermon in Luke's Gospel as our framework for prayer: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me..." In this sermon, Jesus stated 7 different things the Spirit of Lord was doing in and through him. We will use those 7 things as a launching pad to guide us in our collective prayers. Together, we will pray as a large group and in small groups of three people.

We will be praying with other churches that have a variety of backgrounds and spiritual traditions. Some will be more liturgical, preferring written and historical prayers. Others will be more charismatic, comfortable praying with spontaneity and in public. For some of you, this may be a comfortable space. For others, it may be challenging and discomforting.

I do hope you can join us, either in person or via Zoom. And if you aren't able to join, I hope you can still pray with us in spirit (between 7:00-8:00pm). How beautiful to imagine our collective prayers covering our city as we seek God's face together! I hope to see you tonight.

Lectionary Readings for May 7

Accompaniment for Philip
A few weeks back, I sent an email about a young man named Philip who had fled Sierra Leone seeking asylum in the US. Along his journey, he had to have a foot amputated. He is currently in Oakland and Immigration Movement 4 Human Integrity is working to put together an accompaniment team for him. An accompaniment team commits to coming alongside Philip to help him reach goals he has set. These include receiving a prosthesis, finding work, and enrolling in community college. The time commitment is generally for 6 months and 1-2 hours a week. If you are interested in joining an accompaniment team for Philip, please reach out to Pastor Calvin at pastor@pbpc.org.

Help with Recycling
We are currently in need of a volunteer who would be willing to take out our recycling bin on Sunday each week. The pick up is early Monday morning and due to limited staff, we have not been able to consistently get this task completed. If you are willing to help, please email Amber at amber@pbpc.org.

Food Pantry: May 10 from 5-6pm
Our next food pantry is scheduled for May 10 from 5-6pm. Please arrive at 4:30pm to help set up. If you'd like to help, you can register HERE.

Session Fireside Chats: May 14 and May 21
The Mission Study for PBPC is almost complete. To help finalize it and get it ready to send to the Committee on Ministry (COM) who will be responsible for its approval, Session would like to host further opportunities for conversation and reflection. Both fireside chats will occur immediately following the service. No sermon discussion will take place those days.
