As part of our training, I had to instruct the students as to the dress code for our team while we were in the villages doing our work: boys had to wear long pants and girls had to wear dresses, even though it was often very hot and dusty and we would be playing with a bunch of active children. I often experienced pushback from my students – why would God care if we wore pants instead of shorts? I had to explain that we dressed a certain way not because God disapproves of shorts, but because we represented Jesus and didn't want our message to be compro...

I had an experience some time ago where a new pastor was introduced at a presbytery meeting; he was starting out at a church I was familiar with and from some of the things he said I thought that he would be someone that I could connect and perhaps be friends with. So during a break in the meeting I approached him and introduced myself. He was polite, but after a brief exchange he excused himself to go talk with someone else that he had spotted over my shoulder. I was a little bit disappointed, but tried not...

I don't know what came over me, but I remember pinching the boy next to me so hard that I made him cry. Unfortunately, I was sitting in the front row and my teacher saw the whole thing. I remember being scolded by her and then marched to the back of the classroom, where I was banished to a lone desk where I could pose no threat to any of my classmates. I think I spent several weeks in this exile, thinking about and regretting what I had done.
